Bowhill Grange
Hobart & Southern Tasmania, TAS
Built 1854 as part of the Anstey Barton estate, then home to the Agnew family for six generations from 1878 — including Sir James Agnew, Tasmanian Premier in the 1880s. The Assyrian, the 1882 Melbourne Cup winner, was stabled here for nearly twenty years. National Trust listed. Peter and Ruth Gee run two refurbished cottages on the property — Elizabeth's Cottage and Shepherd's Rest — set among ancient cypress pines on a sandstone ridge, with merino pastures and Table Mountain in the distance. Five minutes from Oatlands.
