The Paddock Project

Byron Bay, NSW

Karen Gross founded The Paddock Project as a working market garden on Argyle Street in Mullumbimby, using syntropic farming — the multi-strata succession method developed by Ernst Götsch — to grow seasonal vegetables, herbs and flowers chemical-free, SXC certified organic. The garden is also a registered NDIS disability employer, running supported-employment work programs that won the 2023 Byron Shire Community Award for Access and Inclusion. The roadside stall sells what's been harvested that day; a kiosk in the garden does barista coffee and chai. Wednesday evenings 4–6pm there's live music and a vegetable curry from the beds. Workshops in seasonal medicine, kids' soil science, yoga, and farm tours run through the year.
