Papunya Tula Artists
Alice Springs & Red Centre, NT
Owned entirely by its Aboriginal shareholders — predominantly Luritja and Pintupi people from the Western Desert — Papunya Tula has been operating since 1972, when Geoffrey Bardon persuaded men at a remote community to paint a school wall. That act launched one of Australia's most consequential art movements. The Alice Springs gallery now represents around 120 artists, with works held in major public institutions worldwide.
