Majestic Cinemas Pomona

Cairns & Tropical North, QLD

Australia's longest continuously operating commercial cinema, built in 1929 by Albie Halfpapp from rainforest timber milled at Princes Sawmill — the English family's mill near Malanda Falls. Designed by local architect Bob Hassell as a "tropical" theatre with auditorium airflow built in. Queensland Heritage Register listed. Original 1930s carbon arc projector still in the foyer; original potato sack seating still in the auditorium. Tablelands Regional Council owns the building; a private operator runs the screenings. Home of the Malanda Theatre Company. Eighty-five kilometres south-west of Cairns.
