Thousand Lakes Lodge

Hobart & Southern Tasmania, TAS

A former Antarctic Training Facility on the Central Plateau, built by the Australian Antarctic Division as Bernacchi Lodge to acclimatise expeditioners to alpine conditions before deployment south. Acquired and refurbished as accommodation in 2016. Off-grid, no Wi-Fi, limited reception. The setting is the dolerite-and-tarn country between Great Lake and the western lakes — Australia's only true alpine plateau outside the Australian Alps. About two and a half hours north of Hobart on the Lake Highway.
