Built from 1860 to defend Port Phillip Bay's entrance against feared seaborne attack, Fort Queenscliff is a working piece of Victorian colonial anxiety. Weapons, cannon, medals and photographs dating to the 1880s fill the museum inside the fort walls. Access is by guided tour only — through fortifications, towers and gun emplacements that make the threat feel, briefly, real.
