Capricorn Caves

QLD

A privately owned limestone cave system 23km north of Rockhampton, operating as a tourist attraction since 1884 — Queensland's oldest. John Olsen discovered the caves in 1881 by rope and candle; his family owned them through four generations until 1988, when the Augusteyn family bought the freehold. John Augusteyn runs them now. Three tour formats, from the 45-minute Cathedral Cave walk (which has classical acoustics and occasional live opera) to the Adventure Tour squeeze through Fat Man's Misery.
