Michael and Janet Buxton donated their collection of contemporary Australian art to the University of Melbourne, then funded the gallery to house it. That clarity of purpose shows. On the Victorian College of the Arts campus in Southbank, the 2018-opened space runs solo and thematic shows, artist commissions, and publishing projects — a working gallery embedded in an art school, which keeps it usefully restless.
