Bowral Empire Cinema

Southern Highlands, NSW

A 1915 four-screen cinema on Bong Bong Street, continuously running since opening — the operators say it's the oldest in mainland Australia. The Empire hosted Sir Don Bradman's civic farewell before his first Ashes tour in 1930, and was one of the first country cinemas to install sound that same year. Run today by Richard Ruhfus, David Graham and Gerard Aiken with 24 staff. First-run films alongside Met Opera, National Theatre Live, Paris Opera Ballet, and the annual Alliance Française French Film Festival. 560 seats across four screens.
