Gavin Berry has been making wine in Western Australia's Great Southern for over 30 years — Plantagenet, then West Cape Howe, and since 1989 his own eight hectares bordering Porongurup National Park. Low-fertility gravelly loam, sub-3T/acre yields, and a northerly aspect do most of the work. The focus is Riesling, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay; grapes for the Cabernet Malbec and Shiraz come from warmer Mt Barker and Frankland River sites.
