The land here was logged bare in the 1880s to lay sleepers for the Eastern Railway. Lion Timber Yards — the Adelaide firm that gave this place its name — moved in by 1890, felling jarrah for the gold rush colony. The winery comes later in the story, growing and hand-picking its fruit on the same Sawyers Valley ground.
