Brian and Jill Perry started Australia's first whale-watch operation here in 1987, after Brian mistook a resting humpback for a log on a fishing run and Jill advertised in the local paper that afternoon. The Peaker family, locals involved since the early days, run it now aboard Quick Cat II, a Hervey Bay-built catamaran with five viewing decks and the only fully wheelchair-accessible deck in the local fleet. The season runs from July, when humpbacks settle into the bay, the world's first declared Whale Heritage Site, and surface alongside the boat.
