Limestone walls built by convict labour in 1852, Fremantle Prison held inmates until 1991 — nearly 140 years of continuous use. Death row, solitary cells and gallows remain intact. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, its torchlight and tunnel tours are the reason to visit: guides work from documented prison folklore rather than polished heritage-speak.
