FIELD ATLAS

Fraser IslandGreat Walk

Ninety kilometres of sand, not rock or dirt. K'gari's Great Walk traverses the world's largest sand island from south to near-tip — six to eight days through perched freshwater lakes, rainforest growing improbably from dunes, and open eucalypt woodland. Dingoes are present and serious. Walkers' camps like Lake Boomanjin are small by design. Bring everything in; there are no rubbish bins.
