The assistant keeper's cottage sits below Gabo Island's pink granite light, built between 1858 and 1862, fourteen kilometres off Mallacoota. You reach the island by boat or light plane, weather permitting — a bad forecast can strand you for days, so you pack accordingly. Three bedrooms, sleeps eight. Fur seals lie on the granite rocks below; little penguins come ashore after dark. A caretaker meets the boat.
